In its basic sense it conveys the meaning of propagation or transmission (of knowledge, information) and can be read as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u3067\u3093<\/span>) or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tsuta<\/span>(e) (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u3064\u305f<\/span>\u3048).<\/p>\n<p>In combination with other kanji (\u6f22\u5b57) and a more samurai-centric view of things we encounter words like hi<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u79d8<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>, secret) as pertaining to hi<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> no waza (\u79d8<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u306e\u6280, secret techniques) that are usually passed on as ku<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u53e3<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>, oral instruction) to selected deshi (\u5f1f\u5b50, disciples) as to assure that they do not become known outside a ry\u016b (\u6d41, school). The raison d\u2019\u00eatre being that a certain (martial) technique leaving a school would enable others to devise ways to defeat it. This is not to say that certain ry\u016b will not include gai<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u5916<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>, techniques from other schools) in their curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Further, some kory\u016b (\u53e4\u6d41, \u201cold\u201d budo schools predating 1886; as opposed to modern \u201csporty\u201d Japanese martial arts) distinguish between sho<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u521d<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>, entry transmission), ch\u016b<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u4e2d<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>, middle transmission), and oku<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u5965<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>, inner transmission, secret teachings). No wonder then, that those hi<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> and oku<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> are somewhat <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span>setsu (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u8aac, legendary) in nature due to the speculation afforded by those ignorant to the teachings.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s hope one or the other reader will now embark on a journey to become a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span>setsu no nawashi (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u8aac\u306e\u7e04\u5e2b, legendary nawashi). A career in rope often starts as a te<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tsuda<\/span>i (\u624b<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u3044, helper, assistant), before you begin tying your first of ten thousand takatekote (\u9ad8\u624b\u5c0f\u624b). Suffice to say that only those TKs will count that didn\u2019t cause nerve damage or other injuries. Should, for instance, TK number 7,834 go wrong, you will automatically make a name for yourself as ayash\u012b <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span>setsu (\u602a\u3057\u3044<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u8aac, dubious legend) and needed to start all over.<\/p>\n<p>Of course it would help if you had a shish\u014d (\u5e2b\u5320\b, master) who passes on his secrets to you (himitsu o <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tsuta<\/span>emasu, \u79d8\u5bc6\u3092<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u3048\u307e\u3059), so you won\u2019t have to make them up on your own. Depending on how a ry\u016b is organized, there may be a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span>sh\u014d (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>\u627f, scroll) containing the essence of the teachings. Furthermore, if you showed utmost commitment and dedication you might even be treated as a true disciple and given a menkyo kai<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (\u514d\u8a31\u7686<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>) that would certify you as having fully received (and grasped) all the teachings of the ry\u016b.<\/p>\n<p>There is a gazillion other words containing <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">den<\/span> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4f1d<\/span>).
